Microneedling aftercare: what to do and what to avoid

TL;DR

Good microneedling aftercare is simple: keep your skin clean, calm and protected for the first 72 hours. Skip makeup for 24 hours, avoid sweaty workouts, swimming and saunas for around 72 hours, pause retinol and acids for a few days, and wear SPF 30 or higher every day for at least two weeks.

Microneedling aftercare is the part of your treatment that happens at home, and it makes a real difference to how quickly your skin settles and how good your results look. Microneedling creates thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin to trigger collagen production, so for the first few days your skin needs a little extra care while those channels close.

This guide walks you through exactly what to do and what to avoid in the first 24 hours, the first 72 hours and the first two weeks, plus the signs that mean you should get in touch. Gina has over 10 years' experience in the beauty industry and specialises in skincare, and this guide builds on the aftercare advice we give every microneedling client at our salon in Sutton Coldfield.

What should you do straight after microneedling?

For the first 24 hours, keep your skin clean, calm and bare. Leave it free of makeup, avoid touching your face, wash only with lukewarm water or a gentle cleanser that evening, and apply the soothing product your therapist recommends. Expect it to look and feel like a mild sunburn. That is completely normal.

Your skin is at its most open straight after treatment, which is why the serum applied during your appointment can work so well. It also means anything you put on your face in the first day can irritate it more than usual. That's why the first day of microneedling aftercare is all about keeping things simple.

Your first 24 hours checklist

  • Wash your hands before touching your face.
  • Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel. Don't rub.
  • Use a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser to keep your skin comfortable.
  • Sleep on a fresh, clean pillowcase.
  • Stay out of direct sun.
  • Skip makeup, swimming, saunas and steam rooms.

What should you avoid after microneedling?

The main things to avoid after microneedling are makeup for 24 hours, sun exposure, heavy sweating, swimming and saunas for around 72 hours, and active skincare such as retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs and scrubs for a few days. All of these can irritate healing skin or introduce bacteria into the tiny channels.

Makeup and skincare products

Wait at least 24 hours before wearing makeup, and longer if your skin still feels tender. When you do go back to it, use clean brushes or sponges, because old applicators carry bacteria. Hold back on retinol, vitamin C, exfoliating acids and scrubs for a few days, then reintroduce one product at a time so you can spot anything that stings.

Exercise, heat and water

Give it around 72 hours before hot workouts, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and swimming. Sweat and chlorine can sting and irritate freshly treated skin, and pools are not sterile. A gentle walk is fine.

Picking and peeling

If your skin feels dry or flakes a little after a few days, let it shed naturally. Picking can leave marks, especially on deeper skin tones where pigmentation is more likely.

Gina's tip: Plan your appointment around your diary. Book microneedling at least a week before a wedding, holiday or big night out, so your skin has time to settle and you're never tempted to skip your aftercare or your SPF.

How long does it take for skin to heal after microneedling?

Most redness fades within one to three days, and any swelling usually settles in the same time. Some people notice mild dryness or light flaking around days two to five. The visible recovery is quick, but the collagen rebuilding that gives you your results carries on under the surface for several weeks.

A typical recovery timeline

  • Day 1: pink to red, warm and tight, like a mild sunburn.
  • Days 2 to 3: redness fading, skin may feel dry.
  • Days 3 to 5: possible light flaking. You can ease back into your usual routine, gently.
  • The following weeks: texture and glow continue to improve as new collagen builds.

Recovery varies with the depth of treatment and the serum used. exoPDRN, for example, is designed to reduce downtime. You can read more about how the serums differ in our guide to microneedling with exosomes, exoPDRN or FGF10.

Why is SPF so important in microneedling aftercare?

SPF is the single most important part of microneedling aftercare. Freshly treated skin is more sensitive to UV, and sun exposure can lead to irritation or patches of pigmentation that undo the good work. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, with a high UVA star rating, every day for at least two weeks.

Reapply through the day if you're outdoors, wear a hat, and stay out of direct sun for the first week. The NHS recommends SPF 30 or higher with at least 4-star UVA protection. In the UK, daily SPF matters all year round, not just in summer, so it's a habit worth keeping long after your skin has healed.

Who shouldn't have microneedling, and when should you get in touch?

Microneedling isn't suitable for everyone. It's usually postponed during pregnancy and avoided with active skin infections or cold sores, active breakouts in the treatment area, a history of keloid scarring, bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medication, and recent isotretinoin (Roaccutane). That's why every treatment starts with a consultation.

These precautions are well documented in the clinical literature, including this 2024 review of microneedling in dermatology.

Signs to look out for

Contact us if redness, swelling or pain gets worse after day three rather than better. If you notice yellow or green discharge, crusting, spreading heat, a rash or a fever, contact your GP or NHS 111 promptly, as these can be signs of an infection or allergic reaction.

If you have a skin condition

If you have rosacea, eczema, melasma or severe acne, speak to your GP or a dermatologist before booking. You're also welcome to come in for a free skin consultation so we can talk through what's right for your skin.

How do you get the best results from microneedling?

Results build over a course rather than a single session. Most people see the best improvement in texture, scarring and stretch marks after a short course, with sessions spaced several weeks apart so collagen has time to rebuild in between. Following your microneedling aftercare after every session protects that progress.

We'll recommend the right serum and number of sessions for your skin at your consultation. Many clients start with a SKINSTORM facial course to prepare the skin, and some combine microneedling with chemical peels over time. Once you've finished a course, occasional maintenance sessions help keep your results going.

Frequently asked questions

How long after microneedling can I wear makeup?

At least 24 hours. Good microneedling aftercare means keeping your skin bare for the first day so the tiny channels can close, then using clean brushes and gentle products when you go back to makeup. If your skin still feels tender, give it another day.

Can I wash my face after microneedling?

Yes, from the evening of your treatment. Use lukewarm water or a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry with a clean towel and follow your microneedling aftercare advice. Avoid scrubs, cleansing brushes and anything with acids for a few days.

When can I exercise after microneedling?

After around 72 hours. Sweat can sting and irritate healing skin, so hold off on gym sessions, running and hot classes until then. Gentle walking is fine in the meantime.

How long does redness last after microneedling?

Usually one to three days. Most clients look like they have a mild sunburn on the day of treatment, and it fades quickly. If you have an event coming up, ask about exoPDRN, which is designed to reduce downtime.

How much does microneedling cost at Gina Rose Beauty?

From £100 for a 30-minute appointment at our Sutton Coldfield salon. The final price depends on the serum you choose, which we confirm at your free skin consultation.

How many microneedling sessions will I need?

It depends on your goal. General skin rejuvenation may need fewer sessions, while scarring and stretch marks typically respond best to a short course. We'll recommend a plan that suits your skin at your consultation.

Is microneedling safe?

Yes, when it's carried out by a trained practitioner with sterile equipment on suitable skin. It isn't recommended during pregnancy or with active skin infections, so we always check your suitability before treatment.
