SPF after skin treatments: why it matters and how to get it right

TL;DR

SPF after skin treatments is essential, because peels, microneedling and dermaplaning all leave skin more sensitive to UV for a while. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, use enough to cover your face and neck properly, reapply when outdoors, and avoid direct sun while your skin recovers. Sun exposure can cause irritation and pigmentation and undo your results.

SPF after skin treatments is the single most important part of aftercare, whatever treatment you've had. Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to the sun, and a few minutes of unprotected UV can lead to irritation or dark patches that take months to fade.

This guide explains why skin is more sensitive after treatment, how long to be extra careful, how much SPF to use and how to choose one that suits sensitive skin. Gina has over 10 years' experience in the beauty industry and specialises in skincare, and SPF is something we talk about with every client at our Sutton Coldfield salon.

Why is SPF after skin treatments so important?

SPF after skin treatments is essential because treatments such as chemical peels, microneedling and dermaplaning temporarily make your skin more sensitive to UV. Peels and dermaplaning remove the outer layer of dead skin cells, and microneedling creates tiny channels in the skin. While it recovers, sun exposure is more likely to cause irritation, redness and pigmentation.

Pigmentation is the biggest risk. Dark patches can appear after sun exposure on freshly treated skin, especially on deeper skin tones, and they can take months to fade. Daily SPF is what protects both your skin and the results you've worked for.

How long should you be extra careful?

Take extra care for at least the first one to two weeks after a resurfacing treatment, or until your skin has completely settled. During that time, avoid direct sun where possible, wear a hat outdoors and skip sunbeds. After that, keep wearing SPF every day as part of your normal routine.

  • Dermaplaning: SPF every day for at least a week.
  • Chemical peels: SPF every day and no direct sun while skin recovers.
  • Microneedling: avoid the sun for at least 24 hours, then SPF every day.
  • SKINSTORM: avoid direct sun and wear SPF for at least 48 hours.

Our aftercare guides for chemical peels, microneedling and dermaplaning cover each treatment in more detail.

How much SPF should you use?

Most people use far less SPF than they need. For your face and neck, aim for around two finger lengths, applied as the last step of your morning routine. Reapply when you're outdoors for long periods, after sweating, or every two hours in strong sun.

Gina's tip: Use the two-finger rule. Squeeze SPF along the length of two fingers for your face and neck. Most people use far less than they need.

How do you choose an SPF after treatment?

Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher with good UVA protection. The NHS recommends a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 with a 4 or 5-star UVA rating. After treatment, a fragrance-free formula is often more comfortable, and many people with sensitive skin prefer mineral SPFs with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

  • Broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher.
  • A 4 or 5-star UVA rating.
  • Fragrance-free if your skin is sensitive.
  • A texture you enjoy wearing every day, so you actually use it.

Do you need SPF in winter and indoors?

Yes. UVA reaches your skin all year round, including on cloudy days and through windows. That's why we recommend SPF every day, not just in summer or on holiday. The American Academy of Dermatology's guidance on preparing for a chemical peel also stresses sun protection before and after treatment.
